Kouga Wilderness Campsite
Kouga Wilderness is a family run farm and the Ferreiras has been living on “Kleinrivier” since 1815. It is a working farm with apricots, citrus, sheep and vegetables. You can enjoy nature in the scenic Kouga mountains on the border of the Baviaanskloof World Heritage site. The farm was originally split up into 3 parts, “Onderplaas”, “Kleinrivier” and “Bo-plaas”. Bo-plaas became the property of Nico and Melodie Ferreira in 1988. On this part there was an old farm house that was sadly falling apart. The idea of having a guest house started here, but was only realised in 2000 when the house was finally restored to its formed beauty. Soon after the owners had their first visitors it became a hot spot for mountain climbers, hikers and nature lovers. In 2004 the ablution facilities was built and 8 camp-sites was put up under the shades of 4 big old oak trees. In 2005 a big lapa followed where there have been many weddings since. In 2007 the owners decided to built the “River chalet” and in 2008 the “Heuningkrans chalet” followed.
Numerous adventure activities are offered including spectacular hiking trails, 4×4 routes, scenic drives, kloofing, mountain bike routes, fishing, abseiling and rock climbing.
Farming activities can be observed at close quarters and is particularly interesting during harvesting time from December till mid- February when sun-drying of fruit is in progress.
Swim in natural crystal clear pools or in our freshwater swimming pool on the terrain, or try catching Black Bass in nearby Kouga River. Explore the mountain streams in search for the rare and nearly extinct redwing fish or the very scarce, indigenous Galaxias Zebratus, peculiar to this area or identify some of the variety of birds seen on the farm such as the Fish eagle, Knysna- and Vleiloerie.
