Makkedaat Caves

If you are looking for a completely different accommodation experience in the Baviaanskloof, here it is!  We offer several caves. The two principal ones are :

Makkedaat Cave

Absolutely unique. A natural cave that has been enclosed with timber and rock and fitted to sleep 10 people. Facilities include running water, hot shower (Heated by a traditional donkey system and built into the mountain rock), flush toilet (with a view!), small kitchen fitted with gas stove and sink.

A braai place is situated outside the cave and there is also an open boma for those long evenings spent next to a crackling fire with friends and/or family.

Parafin lamps and candles provide the light at night and creates a relaxed atmosphere.

The accomodation is self catering and you need to bring your own bedding. Meals, however, can be provided on request.

Firewood and braai packs can be purchased at the farm. Please arrange when booking.

The mouth of the cave faces east resulting in spectacular views of the sunrise and romantic moons. At night the clear Karoo sky offers excellent opportunities to star gazers.

Due to the fact that the cave forms part of the mountain, it is cool in the summer but warm during the winter. This makes the Makkedaat Grot/Cave a good choice throughout the year.

The Makkedaat Cave is situated in the Baviaanskloof, a malaria and crime free area, 50 kms from the Karoo town, Willowmore in the Eastern Cape.

The farm offers a number of clearly marked hiking routes which will lead you to some interesting sites and rock formations and fresh mountain fountain water.

van Terrebert Cave

A natural rock overhang has been enclosed to form a double storey cave house that sleeps up to 10 people.

Like all caves, it maintains an even temperature, being neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter. An ideal year-round experience.

The cave faces east resulting in spectacular views of the sunrise and romantic moons. At night the clear Karoo sky offers excellent opportunities to star gazers.

There is also a braai outside the cave where you can sit around the fire sharing the day's experiences with your friends.

The upper storey comprises three separate bedrooms and a wooden verandah with a view across the valley while the lower storey is an open-plan sitting, dining and kitchen area with additional sleeping accommodation.

The cave is self catering and you need to bring your own bedding.

Bedding and meals, however, can be provided on request and firewood and braai packs can be purchased at the farm.

Please arrange these when booking.

The cave is situated close to the well known and popular Makkedaat Cave and all activities are shared by these two venues.

Facilities include electric light, power points, running water, hot shower (heated by a traditional donkey system), two flush toilets, gas stove, refrigerator and sink.

A full range of cooking and eating utensils is provided.
